    Description

    Description
An antique 19th century French sterling silver 8-piece dessert / hors d’oeuvres serving set by the silversmith Jean Grandvigne. The handles and service ends feature elegant Renaissance style foliage motifs. Engraved with a heraldic coronet of the noble aristocracy. Each piece is hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, in use from 1838. This mark guaranteed the finest quality French sterling silver of .950/1000 (95% silver and a higher grade than the standard .925 for sterling). Bearing makers marks for Jean Granvigne (sometimes spelled Grandvigne), active from 1868 to 1889 at 30 rue des Gravilliers, Paris. A skilled silversmith generally considered to be one of the best French flatware makers of the nineteenth century. Granvigne did not have a shop where clients could come choose their flatware, but rather made patterns to the specifications of high-end retailers such as Maison Odiot and Emile Puiforcat. His firm was later succeeded by Maison Tetard.
